The 2.4km road tunnel past the Hauptbahnhof lost several of its fans to vibration damage and material failure, and what is left cannot clear the smoke from a burning lorry. Since 5 December 2024 nothing over 3.5 tonnes has been allowed through, which pushes coaches and freight back onto the surface streets around the government quarter. The twenty-year-old ventilation system needs replacing outright; the money for that has not been found, so the tunnel is kept going on repairs and extra inspections — and since August 2026 a shortage of trained control-room staff has shut it on weeknights from about 21:30 to 05:45.
