The stands of the 1936 Olympic swimming stadium are closed to the public and falling apart under sheeting, with the city spending €806,820 a year simply stopping them getting worse. Taking them down and rebuilding them is put at about €61.2m; in 2026 the Senate paused its review of the plans because the money has not been found. The scheme for ten lanes, new stands and a folding roof was tied to an Olympic bid, and Berlin withdrew that bid on 24 September 2026. The open-air pool still operates in summer.
