The company moved out in summer 2023 for a rebuild and extension. A construction freeze in the 2024 savings round was withdrawn in January 2025; instead the Senate stretched the project into the 2030s. The opera foundation borrowed against its own office building to pay for 2026, and the Land has promised €20m a year for 2027 and 2028. Nothing is funded after that. Inside, strip-out and securing work goes on; the extension has barely moved. Completion is put at 2030 to 2033, on a budget of €478m. Performances continue at the Schillertheater.
