West Berlin's silver spaceship closed for asbestos removal in 2014 and never reopened. In June 2026 the Senate recommended awarding the site to a project partnership on a 99-year lease, to turn it into a culture and creative quarter with two new towers. In September the partnership was given exclusive negotiating rights until June 2027; the lease still needs the Abgeordnetenhaus. First construction could begin in 2029, with phased opening from 2032 or 2033.
