Bridge inspections have already capped the 1977 structure at 3.5 tonnes, which keeps lorries and buses off the Leipziger Straße crossing at Spittelmarkt. Ground surveys ran from January to September 2026; tree felling along both riverbanks starts in November and the tiny forest at Gertraudenhain is being moved. Demolition of the first half begins in early 2027, with the other half kept open to traffic; the job runs to the end of 2029, at about €40m, alongside a redesign of Spittelmarkt and the riverbanks and provision for a future tram. The riverside paths close for the duration.
