Cracks found in the prestressed concrete in 2018 forced a complete rebuild of the 190-metre double structure. A 1,500-tonne steel temporary bridge, held together by 20,000 bolts, carried all traffic from 2022. Since June 2026 the first new half has taken the three lanes towards Treptow, while traffic towards Friedrichshain still crosses on the temporary bridge — the last thing to come out before the second new half goes in. Full completion is expected in 2028 at a total of €97.7m.
