The Gate stays open, but its floodlights went off on 26 October 2026 while the state property manager BIM replaces the 2002 system, which breaks down often and needs spare parts that are hard to find. All 281 lamps are being swapped for LEDs, and the control system and electrics are renewed too. The work costs about €1.2m and should cut the power used by about 40%. The two outer passages are closed during the work. The central passage stays open, with a glowing ball in it to show that work is going on. The lights should come back on in early December, looking as they did before.
