Berlin's busiest interchange is being gutted from the inside: walls and false ceilings out, fire protection and services entirely renewed. All the shops and snack bars were cleared out at the start of 2026 and replaced with portable toilets and a temporary travel centre. Trains run normally throughout, which is the point — this is three and a half years of building work around passengers who cannot be sent anywhere else.
